ISO 4406 Standard Explained: Is Your Hydraulic Oil Really “Clean”? Let the Data Speak.

When you look at hydraulic oil, it might look as clear as honey. But don’t let your eyes fool you.

The most dangerous particles in a hydraulic system are invisible. To measure these tiny killers, the international industry uses a specific data standard: ISO 4406.

1. Understanding the Three Numbers

An ISO 4406 code always looks like this: 19/17/14. What do these three numbers mean?

They count the number of particles found in a 1 mL sample of oil at three microscopic sizes:

  • First Number (19): Counts particles larger than 4 microns.
  • Second Number (17): Counts particles larger than 6 microns.
  • Third Number (14): Counts particles larger than 14 microns.

The Doubling Rule: Every time a number increases by 1, the particle count doubles. For example, an ISO code of 19 has twice as many particles as an 18. A small change in the number means a huge change in oil cleanliness!

2. Why “Looking Clean” is a Dangerous Trap

Human eyes can only see particles that are 40 microns or larger.

However, the clearance between modern hydraulic valves and pumps is only 2 to 5 microns.

This means your oil can look perfectly clean to your eyes, but still be filled with millions of 4-micron particles. These invisible particles act like a grinding paste, slowly destroying your system from the inside.

3. What Code Does Your Excavator Need?

Different parts of your machinery require different levels of cleanliness. Here is a quick target reference for construction machinery:

System ComponentTarget ISO CodeCleanliness Level
High-Pressure Proportional Valves16/14/11Extremely Critical
Standard Piston Pumps & Motors18/16/13High Protection
Low-Pressure Gear Pumps20/18/15Basic Protection

4. How Hydravita Helps You Win the Numbers Game

At Hydravita, we don’t manage oil by “feel.” We manage it by data.

  • Precision Glass Fiber: Our filters are engineered with a high Beta-Ratio. They capture 99.9% of particles at the 4, 6, and 14-micron levels, keeping your ISO code safely low.
  • Perfect Aftermarket Fit: Designed specifically for heavy-duty brands like CAT, Komatsu, and Sany, ensuring your system hits its target cleanliness code every day.

Don’t trust your eyes. Trust the data. Keep your ISO 4406 code low, and your machinery’s lifespan long.
